Obama, Hillary Refuse to Call Sri Lanka Bombing Victims “Christians”

On Easter Sunday, radical Islamic terrorists in the island nation of Sri Lanka launched a series of coordinated suicide bombing attacks against numerous Christian churches and hotels frequented by foreigners, leaving more than 200 people dead. The timing and targets of the attacks made it obvious that they were intended to be direct attacks against people of the Christian faith.

In the aftermath of the attacks, though, those on the left have completely refused to acknowledge their religious nature, the religion of the attackers, or even acknowledge the faith of the many victims.

Rather than accurately describing the victims as Christians who were killed in the supposed safety of their own churches, leftist politicians have invented an interesting term to describe these victims: “Easter worshipers”.

Former President Barrack Obama was the first to use this confusing term, saying, “The attacks on tourists and Easter worshippers in Sri Lanka are an attack on humanity. On a day devoted to love, redemption, and renewal, we pray for the victims and stand with the people of Sri Lanka.”

Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, seemed to be working from the same script as Obama when she said, “On this holy weekend for many faiths, we must stand united against hatred and violence. I’m praying for everyone affected by today’s horrific attacks on Easter worshippers and travelers in Sri Lanka.”

Soon “Easter worshippers” was a term that many Democrats and members of the liberal media began using. The question, though, is why has such vague and bizarre phrasing been used when simply calling the victims “Christians” paints such a more accurate picture of the attack’s religious nature?

If only one Democrat had used this odd phrase, it could have been chalked up as nothing more than clumsy wording. However, the sudden popularity of this term among leftist politicians is not accidental.

Using the term “Easter worshippers” allows those on the left to avoid sympathizing with one of the few groups of people that they oppose outright. Condemning the Sri Lanka attacks was a requirement for politicians such as Clinton and Obama – offering condolences to the Christian community and admitting that this was a direct attack on the Christian faith, however, was something that chose to carefully sidestep.

We don’t have to wonder how differently Obama, Clinton, and others would have responded if the roles were reversed and it was the Muslim community who had experienced such an attack. After the recent attacks against Muslim worshipers in New Zealand, Clinton said, “My heart breaks for New Zealand & the global Muslim community. We must continue to fight the perpetuation and normalization of Islamophobia and racism in all its forms. White supremacist terrorists must be condemned by leaders everywhere. Their murderous hatred must be stopped.”

Obama, meanwhile, offered direct condolences to the Muslim community as well, saying “Michelle and I send our condolences to the people of New Zealand. We grieve with you and the Muslim community. All of us must stand against hatred in all its forms.”

When Christians are slaughtered in church on one of the most significant days to people of Christian faith, though, no such condolences are given. Instead, leftists such as Clinton and Obama have gone as far as to invent a puzzling, awkward new term rather than treat the Christian community the same way they treated the Muslim community after the New Zealand attacks.

To those that are familiar with leftist alliances, none of this should be a surprise. In every way imaginable, the left has aligned itself with Islam and those of the Muslim faith while at the same time doing everything possible to demonize those of the Christian faith. Condemning Islamic radicals and standing up for the Christian community, therefore, is simply too much for politicians on the left to take.

Those who are not caught up in the left’s silly word games, though, understand the truth – the threat of radical Islamic terrorists is still frighteningly real, and people of Christian faith all over the world are in danger of becoming their next target.

These attacks and what they mean do not fit the left’s narrative on Islam and Christianity. Rather than putting the narrative aside for even one day of compassion and mourning, though, Clinton, Obama, and many of their leftist colleagues have chosen to play word games instead. One can only hope that their complete lack of compassion and common human decency does not go unnoticed.
