In the early 90s, when her husband was under fire for sexual scandals which would later turn into full-blown rape cases, Hillary Clinton made famous the phrase; “vast right-wing conspiracy.” Today, she has been touring the country giving talks and college commencement speeches in which she attempts to explain away her momentous defeat by Donald Trump and the Make America Great Again movement.
In fact, it’s more than just an excuse tour. Many political analysts and Washington insiders are saying this is her attempt to set herself up for another run. But a run at what, the presidency? She seems to think so. She seems certain that Trump is going to be impeached, and that she might somehow be able to squeeze herself into the office that she has been after for the last 16 years.
Does she have a chance? Not if the system isn’t suddenly and dramatically derailed by subversive forces. Of course, we’re sure such forces are afoot- but in all probability, the Clinton machine is finished.
So what is she up to? Soothing her battered ego, no doubt. Well, we certainly hope that it makes her feel better because her excuses are making her look at best like a broken record- at worst, they are making her look insane.
The overarching narrative behind the litany of excuses for her loss that she offers up is a vast effort by Trump and Russian intelligence to rob her of her rightful place on the throne.
In a panel discussion on May 31, she asked the question, “How did they know what messages to deliver? Who told them? Who were they coordinating with, or colluding with?”
It would be sad if we didn’t know so much about her massive criminal record. But she went on to weave a tale of a global conspiracy. “There were these stories we kept hearing about these guys over in Macedonia,” she said. “Running these fake news sites. The Russians, in my opinion, and based on the intel, these people could not have known how best to weaponize that information unless they had been guided.”
She went on to list a number of media events which were damaging to her campaign, and she described her ideas about how these events were the result of collusion between news outlets like the New York Times and the Washington Post with Macedonian spies to create just the right story at the right time to make her look bad.
This conspiracy conjecture of hers bears the majority of her blame. She also blames WikiLeaks, an organization which she was in love with during Bush’s eight years in office. Today, she calls WikiLeaks a Russian intel organization. But she doesn’t stop with the conspiracy theories. She also blames the nation, and the culture, for her loss.
She blames sexism- on both genders among the American voting public. She blames men. She believes males, across the board, are unable to accept the idea of women in positions of power. She blames women who are the subverted victims of these men and who suffer from internalized misogyny. She blames racism. Because the Obama administration was closely tied to and even campaigned on her behalf, she suggests that her connection to Obama has the racists of America turned against her.
The one person Clinton does not blame is herself. She has nothing to say about the fact that she had no real economic message. In a race where she was up against Bernie Sanders and his socialist rhetoric and Trump’s promise to restore jobs- Hillary had no economic plan. But she makes no mention of this. She takes no responsibility for her flaccid effort on the campaign trail, saying nothing about the fact that she spent more time in hotel rooms than she spent fighting her way to the White House.
She makes no mention of the fact that she was widely seen as entitled, aloof, cold, and gravely ill. Her attempts to humanize herself by talking about hot sauce in her purse came across as awkward and grasping. And, of course, she makes no mention of the cheating and her appointing the disgraced Debbi Wasserman Schultz.
Hillary Clinton is a verifiable criminal and a thoroughly unpleasant person. But it would have been nice to see her lose with dignity, rather than to claw and shriek as her page in history slowly closes.
